Vienna-based singer, improvising electroacoustic musician, sound artist and composer Maja Osojnik has launched her own label, Mamka Records. As the label’s statement claims: Mamka is for those who revolt, rebel, demand and ask questions; it symbolizes risk, confrontation, benevolent radicalism and the implicitness of the unique. The label works with DIY aesthetics: each copy of Mamka’s debut 7″ vinyl single comes with individual linocut-printed and hand-made covers in different color variations.
Mamka Records starts its journey with a release of two songs (Chicken / Die Toten) from the sound-comic work entitled Wendy Pferd Tod Mexico, premiered and winning the first prize at the Berlin Audio-Play Festival / Berliner Hörspielfestival. The sound-comic piece celebrated its first broadcast at Radio Art – Kunstradio (Ö1) in 2018, and it is a production of Osojnik and Matija Schellander’s electroacoustic duo Rdeča Raketa, and the author Natascha Gangl who also contributed the lyrics of the songs.

Mamka now takes pre-orders for the label’s debut single which releases officially on 1 November. The 7″ vinyl release is fully hand-made and comes as limited edition of 200 copies. 120 copies will be on sale now at the label’s website and Bandcamp site; and 50 copies are going directly in a special box that will come out in 2020, and will include two more hand-printed singles from the sound-comic, a comic book, a small DIY listening device, a bag or T-shirt, and more surprises in form of different goodies. The leftover 30 copies will be archived in collections of libraries or on the shelves of the band members, label owners and friends who helped to make the project happen.
The label is celebrating its birth and the release of the first single on 24 November, Saturday at 7 pm at Setzkasten in Vienna with an exhibition opening, label presentation and live performance of Wendy Pferd Tod Mexico.
