Voice artist, singer, dancer, performer, teacher, coreograph and one of the most active Slovenian improviser Irena Z. Tomažin dissects the voice from flesh-to-bone through various creative procedures, from voice improvisations, the dissembodiment of voice throught songs and words, to the twisting of voice from and in the body through dance and performance. Her music, more specifically her sound experimentation is an exploration of the landscapes of voice that include words, fragments of texts, (traditional) melodic singing, and other vocal techniques, including humming, clicking, and other sounds made with the mouth that pertain not (only) to the voice but also to the body.
In a video portrait created for Centralala.si and exhibited at the Musica Femina exhibition in the framework of this year’s edition of the City of Women festival, Irena Z. Tomažin talks about her own work, about position of women in arts and society, and about how voice marks and defines you through societal perceptions.
