Opening of Steklenik, a new gallery for sound, bio-acoustic and art in Ljubljana

Zavod Cona, in collaboration with University Botanic Gardens Ljubljana, is opening Steklenik, a new gallery for sound, bio-acoustic and art. Zavod Cona has esthablished itself as a primary producer of radio art and sound art through its concert series ZVO.ČI.TI DUO – which has been hosted artists such as Boris Baltschun, Samo Kutin, Alessandra Eramo, Jaka Berger, Liz Helman, Irena Z. Tomažin among many others –, their series of sound walks, exhibitions – as Radio Arts Space, a gallery inside radio and Oscillations / Reflections about Slovene electroacoustic composers –, and their experimental radio programme RadioCona.

Steklenik, a gallery for sound, bio-acoustic and art is an art programme in the Tivoli Greenhouse’s space. It addresses works that are connecting art and science practices through sonic research of nature and environment. The presented artworks range from bio-acoustic, sound ecology, soundscapes, sound art etc. They are intended for curious public, for those who are interested in joint experience of botanics observation and listening to the current artworks of Steklenik’s programme.

The gallery is opening on 20 October, Saturday with a new work by one of the Slovenian pioneers of field recordings, musique concrète and sound art Boštjan Perovšek, who was also one of the first artists playing free improvisation with his legendary group Saeta, which was the very first collective to step into the realms of experimental music, minimalism, electroacoustic music and improvisation. Boštjan Perovšek is now working with what he terms bio and industrial acustica, in which he combines sounds from the nature and industrial noises. The composition for a 8-channel sound system “Bugs, A Walrus, A Door – Steklenik 2018” was created especially for the opening exhibition at Steklenik and is based on the original music of “Bugs, A Walrus And A Door Whirl In A Circle Dance” from 1986 (8-channel version, 30 minutes). The sound material is composed from various sounds of bugs, combined with sounds of a walrus and a door. For the composition he was collaborating with acclaimed biologist Dr. Matija Gogala and it was one of his first forays into combining worlds of science and art.
