Mauricio Valdés San Emeterio (1976)
improviser, composer, sound researcher

 
He is a Mexican musician, based in Ljubljana, Slovenia since 2011.

His career has been developed around different artistic areas with a special emphasis in acoustic, electroacoustic and experimental music. His catalogue includes works for solo instrument, ensemble, mix media, guided improvisation, installation, film, performance and assorted performing arts. His works had been presented in 19 countries within the official program of festivals, conferences and symposia near music and sound art. With more than two decades of experience on free improvisation, which was – for many years – a parallel activity that has become the most important aspect of his professional development, where composition, sound art and software development had converge.

He was part of the first Composition and Technology bachelor’s degree effort in Mexico in the mid 90’s, since then his work combines high content of technology and software improvement. He studied with Jose Luis Castillo (Composer/Conductor) in Guanajuato, México (2001–2005) composition and analysis workshops organized by the Symphonic Orchestra of Guanajuato’s University. His main professor of electroacoustic music has been multi-awarded composer Åke Parmerud since 1999. He has taken Workshops with nearly a dozen composers, programmers and sound artists, being the most significant with The Convolution Brothers in the 90’s.

Between 2004 and 2006 he was a PHONOS resident composer of the foundation at the University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain where he composed 3 interactive pieces for acoustic instruments and technology and collaborated as Monitor of the Master’s degree on Digital Sound and Composition. He has been active professor at ESAY music school in Merida, Yucatán, Mexico since 2005; music technology, composition. He worked also at University of Guanajuato. In 2007 he starts collaborating at MUAC at National University Museum in Mexico City to create the only multichannel sound space in Mexico, the Experimental Sound Space EES.

He is a founding member of AARSOM (Association of Mexican Sound Art).

A multi-user, multi-platform audio-visual application made in JAVA that allowed real-time interaction between users with audio and visual respond by the exchange of control data using JSyn audio synthesis as core local generator of sound and image – developed at the MTG, Barcelona, Spain in 2006 with Hugo Solís, for the 250 anniversary of W. A. Mozart, commissioned by Instrumenta Summer Camp Academy, Oaxaca, Mexico.

· Simple Grid:
An aesthetic exploratory stand-alone application developed for Instrumenta, México in 2009 with Miller Puckette

· Arenero:
Firstly made in 2010, with the support of the Mexican FONCA fellowship federal grants, ARENERO software it’s a stand-alone sound manipulation sequencer for the practice and education of sound-art and free improvisation. A major upgrade was commissioned by National University UNAM for Germinal Festival in 2015.

We point out

Blue Sound HUB – musical cycle

In 2015 he started the Blue Sound HUB at the Pocket Theatre Studio and in 2016 in collaboration with Cankarjev Dom of Ljubljana, Slovenia. The cycle was also supported by the Mexican Embassy in Vienna since 2017. The hub pretends to bring an itinerant, open and neutral space for promotion, research and education, mainly regarding multi-channel sound art and music.
